We are getting settled in here at Double Adobe. Our actual mailing address is in McNeal, Arizona although we drive to Bisbee 14 miles to the Safeway store. We haven’t been to McNeal at all yet so don’t know just what is there but I’m guessing nothing more than a small grocery store if that.

The weather turned bad soon after we got here, wind and a lot of rain early this morning.

Yesterday I drove the trike alone to Douglas which is about 15 miles away. It is a dying town with the old town about half empty with boarded up store fronts. The big exception is a turn of the century hotel, the Gadsden Hotel. It was the location for the movie “The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean.” Quite splendorous with Italian white marble stairway in the lobby and a 42 foot long Tiffany stained glass window. Even the bathroom stalls are made of the marble. Very ornate carved doors to the rooms. It was originally built in 1907, burnt to the ground in 1928 but was completely rebuilt. It’s getting a bit run down but still cool. It is still open for renting a room for as low as 60 bucks a night up to 100 for a suite. I didn’t ask if they took pets but if they do we will probably spend a night there.

It reminded me somewhat of the Klamath Falls Hotel Baldwin which was built around the same time. Not as magnificent a lobby but it was a very cool place to stay until it was closed except as a museum.

Here’s a photo of the stairwell and stained glass. Not mine.

And another.

I will be taking Von down to see it as soon as the weather improves which probably won’t be until Wednesday. We have a lot of sightseeing to do here. At the top of my list is the Chiricahua National Monument, another bio diverse landscape.
