Pancho Villa New Mexico State Park
We got on the road at 10:15 this morning. It was overcast all day and the wind kicked up in the afternoon. We stopped twice for gas and once to take some photos which I won’t get up today. Did 166 miles about half on Arizona Highway 9 which follows the old railroad line that hauled all the copper out of Bisbee. It pretty much is the border with Mexico. We saw a few border patrols but didn’t encounter any road blocks like we saw so many of in Arizona.
Gas is infrequent but sufficient if you take every opportunity. Remember the Trike only has about a 150 mile range to be safe. (Five gallons at 30 to 35 mpg.)
It’s actually spitting rain as I write this with gusty wind blowing. We ate a light dinner after not eating anything after breakfast until we arrived here at 3:30. Not exactly eating up the miles. This state park is in the Village of Columbus. It is a village alright, we tried to find an open cafe for a cup of coffee to warm us up with out luck.
Set up the new larger tent without too much difficulty. It’s the first time doing so since I did it once at a park in Casa Grande. It’s much larger than the old one with a huge vestibule for our bags. It think it will work well for us.
The ride was uneventful in a good way. Very, very little traffic as it is all 30 miles north on Interstate 10. We saw five motorcycles all day and not many more cars than that.
The park is very nice. For $10 a night we even have a tin canopy over the picnic table where I am sitting to write this. Not sure what the weather forecast is for tomorrow. When I looked this morning no rain was predicted and it was supposed to be improving as we went east and south but it doesn’t look good right now.
Bentley held up well. He fits in Von’s lap on a small pillow with a sweatshirt and kerchief on his head in this weather. Too cute for words.
Von and I are both a little worn out from all the work getting ready and from being battered about by the wind so it will be early to bed for us. We hope to make it to just south of the Carlsbad Caverns tomorrow but we won’t push hard if the weather is sucky.
A good day in all. Feels great to be back to motorcycle touring.
