Fort Davis State Park, Texas

Today started as a cold one. We didn’t leave Van Horn until 11:15 as we waited for the temperatures to get as high as possible. It was something like 50 degrees F when we got on the road. We haven’t seen the sun since we left on Sunday from Arizona. So we bombed down the freeway at 70 mph dressed in all our foul-weather gear. Even poor Bentley. He had on a cotton t-shirt, a cotton sweatshirt, and a nylon rubber coated rain coat. Von and I had plenty on but for me the key is the electric heated vest. I also had on full leathers, a Patagonia fleece vest and full rain gear. Von had on much the same but as it turned out she never did use the electric heated vest and was still just fine. It’s hard to tell how Mr. B is doing since he can’t tell us but we do our best for him. He really does not want to get on the trike when we get going and is extremely happy when we stop for our frequent breaks.

I think when we get the trailer attached behind the trike and we put him in a hard shell kennel on top of it he will be much happier. It’s pretty cramped and windy sitting on Von’s lap.
The sun did finally come out for about an hour on the way here. That’s the first we’ve seen of it since we left on Sunday. But it disappeared again when we came into lower elevations.

This state park is very nice and is a birder’s paradise. I guess we are too early for the best of it but as I sit here in camp I have heard at least 3 bird songs that are completely new to me. I bought the National Geographic Birds of North America book today at the camp office. Hopefully it will help us ID some of the critters we will see while we are here. No cell phone service though but it is only four miles to the Thriftway Store and cell service in town. I also found a free WiFi coffee shop so will be able to publish this with some photos tomorrow when we take Bent in to have a haircut.
We paid for 3 nights camping. Whew! I thought it would be ten dollars a night and it was actually double that. Extra fees per person and having to pay a day use fee for each day on top of the campsite doubled the published price. Still, that’s three nights for the price of a cheap hotel for one night.
No campers around us as yet but spring break starts this Saturday so that will most likely change. It is very quiet except for the occasional vehicle driving past. Von is taking a nap with Mr. B in the tent. I do love being out here.
Later,
Greg
