Galveston Memorial

In 1900 Galveston suffered the worst natural catastrophe in terms of fatalities in American history. An estimated 6000 people were killed. This statue is a memorial to that event.

After this disaster the existing seawall was built and the island’s elevation was actually raised some ten feet. More pics of this statue are here.

There are a lot of things to do here. It is a resort town much more than I realized. I had always thought of it as an oil rig town. The effects of Hurricane Ike are still very evident six months later but the town is recovering. We still have a few more days here and are hoping for better weather which seems to have so far become the theme of this trip.
