Hagertown to Newburgh NY

We were actually in Hagertown last night, in MD. We drove the 14 miles down to the Antietam National Park and did the 8 mile driving tour of the battleground. The area is amazingly hilly. It is hard for me to envision the battle because the vegetation must be a lot different now. This battle resulted in the largest number of casualties in the civil war in a single battle. Bodies were stacked like cord wood on parts of the read we rode.

From there we followed the GPS shortcut to Gettysburg over some beautiful country roads that probably added an hour to the drive but was worth it.

Gettysburg seems to be the Disneyworld of national parks. I bought a 12 oz cup of coffee for Two Sixty Five!! We didn’t spend any time there because we were running so late and I wanted to get to our reserved hotel before dark since it is deer country. We then rode interstates across Pennsylvania. The roads were horrible, the snow country eats the pavement up and they do not keep them maintained. As soon as we crossed into New York State they improved but it was only fifty miles of the over 300 we rode yesterday.

We have another 250 miles to go today then we will slow down for a bit. We have really done the mileage the past week, going as far in a week as we were doing in a month previously.

Gotta get moving now, gonna try to beat the weather as we head north. Predictions are for chance of rain and thunderstorms today.
